The Problem: Hiring Hourly Employees Drains Resources
Our founder, Rob Hunter, was once Marble Slab Ice Cream's largest franchisee. As an owner of 7 stores, he noticed a huge problem -- some locations would struggle to receive job applications while others would receive dozens of resumes but deal with poor performance and high turnover.
Managers had to spend an inordinate amount of time interviewing, hiring, and training new employees instead of focusing on the ice cream itself. Soon, Hunter realized this was a problem not just for him, but for most businesses with hourly employees. Soon after, HigherMe was born.

Let's Make Hiring Easier Together
Hi! My name is Rob, and I'm the CEO and founder of HigherMe. We help retail and restaurant employers find, screen, and hire better employees faster. I used to own 7 ice cream stores and have worked as a Data Scientist for a venture-funded technology company.
Have you ever met someone that's been able to say that sentence before? One of my investors joked that I must have been "engineered in a lab" as the perfect person to start this company. I appreciate that sentiment! One of the big challenges in Silicon Valley is this apparent blind spot for how the majority of the American workforce operates, and hourly workers at places like Dunkin' Donuts, Burger King, and California Pizza Kitchen are a huge part of that.
I had my first hourly job when I was barely 15, helping with the drive-thru at my local McDonald's. A few short years later, I was in the ice cream business -- I eventually opened 7 locations and employed a few hundred people. Over the years, I had many wonderful employees work for me. One of the first was a girl named Kendra.
Kendra came into my store and dropped off a paper copy of her resume. This practice might seem foreign to anybody in technology or business, but to anybody in retail, it’s common. As it became, too, for me -- at any given point, I’d have 100 resumes from eager job-seekers stacked up on my desk - and yet I still dealt with frequent turnover.
As my little mini ice cream empire grew, I very quickly realized I didn’t have nearly as much face time with customers or resume-dropper-offers as I did in the early days. This is what made Kendra unique -- I was there when she dropped off her resume.
And it’s a good thing I was, because her resume was awful. There were many misspelled words. There was very poor grammar. “Soccer” and “babysitting” were her top-listed relevant experiences.
And you know what? None of it mattered. Because she was awesome. Bright and cheerful. Full of energy, super enthusiastic, and great with customers. I gave Kendra a shot, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. She stayed with me for nearly four years -- an eternity in retail.
We started HigherMe for many reasons, but more than anything, we wanted to help employers cut through the noise and find more Kendra’s, and help the “Kendra’s” of the world find great opportunities for personal growth, even if they have terrible resumes.
We're on an amazing journey with this company, as we've processed over one million job applications, gotten over a hundred thousand people hired, and are working with thousands of great customers from amazing brands like McDonald's, Burger King, Dominos, White Castle, California Pizza Kitchen, Arby's, Shake Shack, Little Caesars, Papa John's, IHOP, and countless others. We're excited for you to join us!
